One ‘Avatar’ Movie Was More Than Enough, Thank You

Today the release dates for Avatar 2, Avatar: Tokyo Drift &  Avatar In Da Streets were announced. I didn’t care to know exactly when they’re released but you can find that information out on your own. BUT BASICALLY WE’RE GETTING ONE EVERY YEAR UNTIL FOREVER BECAUSE YOU KNOW.

Has anyone actually watched Avatar more than twice? Like, when we all ran to see the pretty blue monkeys in theaters and then for those who bought it on blu-ray because it’s like really pretty for when you want to show off your new flat-screen TV. But like has anyone really sat down, re-watched it over and over again, and can really justify the need for a) 3 sequels b) their love for the movie. I would love to do a NPR piece with you. My contact information is above.

Look, I’m not shocked by this announcement. The movie was huge. This was more than guaranteed. My problem here though is that unless the sequel makes more money than the first movie – WHICH IT WON’T – what is the point? Avatar was a success because it hit right at the time when the 3D gimmick was taking off. That’s why Alice In Wonderland made so much money. But it’s been a couple of years now, the 3D trend is so tired, studios aren’t even reporting how much money their movies have made (or haven’t, rather) from the technology. 3D is deterrent. And you can bet that these things with be in 3D, probably 4D so bring your scratch & sniff card.

Ugh.
